Certain things you need to take care of before you relocate

The last couple of days before the actual day of the move can be quite hectic. This is the time when you need to plan everything without disrupting your day to day responsibilities. You might have to finalize the details of your new home or sign on the lease to a new apartment. As there is a lot to take care of, you might forget about one or more important factors related to the move.

Bear in mind that the key to a hassle-free move is to stay focused and organized. A good practice is to prepare a check list and include the important details about the move that can be just as easily left out. A few important things you would need to take care of before the actual day of the move are mentioned below.

Close/Transfer bank accounts

Contact your bank and make sure they know you are changing your address. Quite a few national banks have branches in locations in myriad cities; in such an instance, you would not have to close your account and merely apply for a transfer to a branch closer to your new home.  If this is not the case, you might have to withdraw your money and transfer it to a new account in a new bank.

Make sure to carry out this process well before the actual day of the move. Otherwise, you would not have access to your money in your new home and this would not be a scenario you would want to be a part of.

Transfer your medical records

Transfer your prescriptions and medical records to new healthcare providers in your new town. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) allow every U.S. citizen to request a copy of his or her medical records. If you have not found a provider, you can request for the records to be sent directly to you, albeit for a fee. Otherwise you can have them transferred to your physician free of charge, in accordance with HIPPA.

Get rid of unwanted items

Dispose old furniture, appliances, clothes, and other items you no longer use. This will lighten your load and also cut down the overall moving cost. You can donate items to a charity that is close to your heart or even organize a garage sale. Moreover, you can sell the items you no longer use through websites, such as eBay or Craigslist or give them away to people who would be using these items.

Prepare a kit for the moving day

Prepare a kit stocked with snacks, drinks, medications, a few utensils, and certain other essentials for the day of the move. These could include a change of clothes, your toiletries, a cell phone charger, and other items that you would immediately need upon arrival to your new address. This way, you would not have to open boxes and search for the items you cannot do without.
