How to Choose the Best Time to Move?

You know you have to move, but how would you know the best time to move?

Moving your home successfully can be done on any day and any season of the year. But moving at the right time can save you a lot of hassle and money. Timing is an important factor that effects the cost of your move, so its important to make sure you take that into consideration when you set out to compare moving company quotes.

Just like any other industry, moving too has its peak and non-peak seasons. Needless to say, during peak times hiring a moving company can be a bit of a headache. Availability is low, and prices are high. You can save yourself quite a bit by planning smartly and hiring a professional moving company or renting a moving truck during the off-peak times.

For professional moving companies, any time of the year may seem right to relocate. But for the families that are planning to move, a careful decision should be made. Decision should be based on key factors that can influence your moving such as budget, stress level, safety, convenience etc.

What month of the year?

General rule of thumb, summer time is considered as the busy season in the moving industry. For obvious reason, majority of people want to move during the summer because the weather is much more predictable. This is especially true if you live on the East Coast.

Months April thru September are the more busy months for moving companies. Consider moving in months other than these so you can have your choice of moving dates and also get off-season pricing. We have a great guide to make moving during the winters easier. Check it out.

What day of the month?

One of the best periods to move is during the second half of the month preferably any day between the 15th day of the month and the 25th. Most people prefer to move during the last days or first few days of the month as a result of job agreement, lease agreement etc. Others prefer to move during the first half of the month after receiving their monthly salary and they have enough money to cover their moving costs.

What day of the week?

Avoid moving during the weekends. They are often the busiest. But Tuesdays are the least selected date for a move. You may enjoy a reasonable discount if you agree to move on a Tuesday. Also, on Wednesdays and Thursdays work well too. However, roadways are often less busy during the weekends.

What time of the day?

If you decide to move during a weekday, you might want to consider planning your move day properly so the move can go as smooth as possible. The biggest issue with moving during the weekdays is the rush hour traffic. As long as you avoid that you won’t have any delays. Also, you want the move to finish up the same day. We would advise to have the movers at your house early morning so you can finish loading up before the evening traffic starts.

You want to alot a fixed amount of time to finish up loading the truck so you can get on the road to your new house. How many hours you need to load up will depend upon how far you have to move. Make sure you take into account driving time and unloading time as well so you aren’t unloading too late into the night.

Follow these tips closely and you’ll have a very smooth move.
